DON'T try to immobilize and stagger him when he is preparing to perform one of his big attacks. You won't be able to stagger him, you'll just eat the attack once he unfreezes. He is very hard to stagger in general, and I was never able to knock him out of one of his big attacks. Additionally, standing on top of your pole isn't going to help you avoid much.
