Gaming Companies Claim Inclusivity, But Exclude African Players

The largest black community lives in Africa and has a long history of being treated as second-class, whether it's colonialism, the slave trade, or gaining access to world-class events. The stereotype of Africa being poor, dirty, and underdeveloped is still strong up to this day with no sign of change on the horizon. Yes, some places are less developed, but in the last few decades, the continent has made massive strides in terms of technology and has seen incredible growth. Despite all the progress, most video game publishers don't have a single server on the continent, and exclude Africa from their events complet

A simple location consisting of a few rooms and some floor loot, Market is a popular drop spot because of its central location on the map. If this location is at the earliest part of the dropship path, it’s almost guaranteed to be active. As an indoor space, this is yet another zone that’s good for making use of trap charact

As for quests... there aren't any extra battle pass challenges. However, it can be quite a grind to get to tier 100 of PUBG's survivor pass , and it's up to the player to decide whether the grind is worth the rewa

It's ridiculous that publishers don't realize the potential of African gamers. This untapped market could drastically increase their revenue and add to the already booming esports industry. African gamers relentlessly soldier on despite being shunned by publishers, and are at a constant disadvantage. If they had a level playing field, they could easily give other teams in the world a run for their mo

Warzone's battle pass offers players 100 tiers of loot progression that lasts for a limited amount of time and can be purchased for the all-too-familiar $10. While the W arzone experience is one of a kind, the battle pass leaves a lot to be desired. There are different operators available, but they aren't very unique visually, and the weapon blueprints all have that same standard Call of Duty feel, with only a few standing out from among the rest. However, the big selling point for the Warzone battle pass is that essentially players get their money back. The pass may cost 1,000 CP, but if the entire pass is completed the player will earn 1,300

Recently, I was matched with someone whose name was a play on the coronavirus. Perhaps merely evidence of a juvenile sense of humor, it hits different when 23,000 people in your city have died of the vi

The powerful close-range shotgun is a must-have for those who love fighting in tight spots and the Gift of Power skin makes it a bit more of an art piece. The mostly white and black design is accented with fiery balls of what looks to be lava cascading from the gun itself. It may not be Season 5's best skin, but it certainly isn't its wo

Most publishers deny Africa from having game servers but release statements condemning racism and promoting equality. It seems like black lives matter, but not enough to get the same services as the rest of the wo

The easiest fix would be to play only with players one trusts. However, one key issue is that my friends range from far better to me to far worse than me, which poses challenges with skill-based matchmaking. Even though my K/D is below one and I have a win rate of 5 percent, squadding up with my higher-skill friends means there will almost certainly be Apex Predators in our lo

Big names in gaming like Apex Legends , FIFA , Fortnite , League of Legends , Valorant , Rainbow Six Siege , and more have a worldwide following with servers everywhere except Africa. As an African gamer, I find it insulting and hypocritical that these companies force us to read Black Lives Matter messages every time we start a game, yet most black people aren't allowed to get the best experience from

Let's take Apex Legends as an example. EA released a statement saying, " We’re contributing $1 million to organizations dedicated to the fight for racial justice in the U.S. and against discrimination around the world." They go on to say, "Beginning with the Equal Justice Initiative, the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, and with more partners to come, we are deepening our support of organizations working to stop systemic racial injustice, fight discrimination and protect human rights in the U.S. and beyo

Quite frankly, I think it's disgusting that these publishers have the nerve to put Black Lives Matter banners on their games when most black people aren't allowed to play them without issues. To me, it's the modern-day equivalent of a "No Africans Allowed" sign. African gamers aren't asking for special treatment, We just want to be treated the same as everybody e

Through a series of multiple buffs by the team at Respawn, Gibraltar has landed in a place where he's quite powerful. His dome shield can save his team in a pinch, and his Ultimate can rain down enough damage to wipe entire squ

For those unfamiliar with the Battle Pass system, it is a one time purchase (usually around $10) that unlocks a ton of in-game cosmetic rewards. However, players have to level up or progress through the battle pass tier to unlock each reward. Games like Fortnite or apex legends future Legends reward players with new character skins, emotes, weapon skins, etc. Battle passes are also only available for a limited time which is usually referred to as a "season," and the items that are offered through the battle pass can only be obtained during this seasonal window. This encourages players to purchase the battle pass and grind through the tier before the season is over so they don't miss out on these exclusive sk
